Low back pain treatment in Newcastle

Low back pain is one of the most common reasons people see an osteopath. Whether it came on suddenly while lifting or has been building for months, we'll work out what's driving it and give you a clear plan to settle the pain and get you moving well again.

Book online or call 0498 184 226. No referral needed.

Common causes of low back pain

  • Muscle and ligament strain from lifting, bending or a sudden movement

  • Stiff or irritated joints in the lower back and pelvis, including the facet and sacroiliac joints

  • Disc-related pain, sometimes with pain referring into the buttock or leg

  • Long hours sitting, driving or standing, or a sudden change in training load

  • Reduced strength and control through the hips and trunk

How we assess your back

Your first appointment takes 45 to 60 minutes. We'll ask about your symptoms, health history, work and activity, then assess how you move, test joint mobility and muscle strength, and complete neurological testing where needed. We'll explain what we find in plain language and check for anything that needs your GP or imaging.

How we treat low back pain

In the short term, we use manual therapy to ease pain and improve restricted range of motion. Alongside this, physical therapy (targeted exercise) builds the strength and stability that help reduce the chance of pain coming back.

  • Manual therapy: soft tissue therapy, joint articulation, muscle energy technique and, where appropriate and with your consent, spinal manipulation

  • Exercise rehabilitation: a simple home program to restore movement, then progressive strengthening for the hips, trunk and back

  • Advice: practical changes for work, sitting, lifting, sleep and sport so you can stay active while you recover

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on how long you've had the pain and what's driving it. Many people come weekly at first, then space sessions out as they improve and take over more of their own exercise program. We review your progress at each visit and will tell you if we think another approach or a referral would help more.

When to see a doctor first

Seek urgent medical care if back pain comes with numbness around the groin or buttocks, new problems controlling your bladder or bowel, worsening leg weakness, fever or unexplained weight loss, or if it follows significant trauma such as a fall or car accident.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a scan before I come in?

Usually not. Most low back pain can be assessed clinically. If we think imaging would change how your back is managed, we'll explain why and refer you to your GP.

Should I rest or keep moving?

For most people, staying gently active helps more than bed rest. We'll show you which movements are helpful right now and which to ease off for a while.

Can I claim osteopathy?

Yes. Claim on the spot with HICAPS if you have extras cover. We also accept Medicare chronic condition management and DVA referrals. See fees and rebates.
