Medicare osteopathy in Newcastle (CDM & ATSI)

If you have a chronic (ongoing) health condition, your GP may be able to refer you for osteopathy with a Medicare rebate. AO Osteopathy accepts referrals under a GP chronic condition management plan or ATSI management plan.

Who is eligible?

People with a chronic condition (generally one that has been present, or is likely to be present, for six months or more) who have a GP chronic condition management plan and a referral from their GP. Older GP management plans and team care arrangements remain valid during the transition period.

How many sessions are covered?

Up to 5 Medicare-supported allied health sessions per calendar year, shared across all allied health services (for example physiotherapy, podiatry and osteopathy)
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can access up to 10 sessions per calendar year

Fees and rebates

Our consultation fee is $105. The Medicare rebate for an osteopathy session (item 10966) is currently $63.40, leaving an out-of-pocket cost of $41.60. Rebate amounts are set by Medicare and can change.

Book your first appointment and bring your referral
After your first session, we send a report to your GP outlining our assessment and treatment plan
At the end of your sessions, we update your GP on your progress

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander health

Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people can also be referred for osteopathy after a health assessment with their GP (item 715), with a Medicare rebate under item 81350. Ask your GP or Aboriginal Medical Service about eligibility.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use my private health insurance as well?

You can't claim Medicare and private health for the same session, but you can use your extras cover for sessions outside your Medicare referral.

Does Medicare cover the full cost?

No. There is a gap between our fee and the Medicare rebate. See fees and rebates.
