Neck pain and headache treatment in Newcastle

Neck pain and stiffness are common with desk work, driving, phone use, stress and poor sleep. For some people the neck also contributes to headaches. We assess how your neck, upper back, shoulders and jaw work together and build a plan to ease pain and improve movement.

Neck problems we commonly see

  • Mechanical neck pain and stiffness

  • Wry neck (sudden, painful neck stiffness)

  • Tension-type headaches

  • Cervicogenic headaches (headaches referred from the neck)

  • Headaches with a neck or jaw component

  • Upper back and shoulder blade tension from desk or manual work

How we assess neck pain and headaches

We ask about the pattern of your pain or headaches, your work set-up, sleep and stress, then assess your posture, neck and upper back movement, jaw and the muscles around your shoulders. We also screen for signs that need medical review.

How we treat it

Manual therapy is used in the short term to reduce pain and improve range of motion through the neck, upper back, ribs and jaw. Physical therapy builds strength and endurance in the postural muscles to help keep symptoms settled long term.

  • Soft tissue therapy for the neck, shoulder and jaw muscles

  • Joint articulation and muscle energy technique for the neck, upper back and ribs

  • Spinal manipulation where appropriate and with your consent

  • Strengthening for the deep neck and mid-back muscles

  • Practical advice on desk set-up, screens, sleep position and breaks

When to see a doctor

See your GP or seek urgent care for a sudden, severe headache unlike any before, a headache with fever, a stiff neck and rash, changes in vision or speech, weakness or numbness, dizziness or loss of balance, or neck pain after significant trauma.

Frequently asked questions

Can osteopathy help migraines?

Migraine is a neurological condition that should be managed with your GP. Some people with migraine also have neck and jaw tension, and we can assess and treat that musculoskeletal component alongside your GP's care.

How many sessions will I need?

It depends on how long you've had symptoms and what's driving them. We'll set goals together at your first visit and review your progress each session.

Do I have to have my neck "cracked"?

No. We discuss options with you first and only use techniques you're comfortable with. Many effective techniques are gentle.

Jaw pain too? See jaw pain and TMJ.
