Shoulder problems we commonly see
Rotator cuff-related shoulder pain
Subacromial pain (sometimes called impingement)
Frozen shoulder (adhesive capsulitis)
Shoulder pain from overhead work, swimming, throwing or gym training
Neck and upper back problems that refer pain into the shoulder
How we assess your shoulder
We assess your shoulder's range of motion, strength and control, along with your neck, upper back and shoulder blade, because these areas often contribute. If we suspect a tear, dislocation or fracture, we'll refer you to your GP for imaging.
How we treat shoulder pain
Manual therapy is used to reduce pain and improve restricted range of motion in the shoulder, shoulder blade, upper back and neck. Physical therapy builds rotator cuff and shoulder blade strength and stability to support your return to work, sport and the gym.
Soft tissue therapy and joint articulation
Muscle energy technique for the shoulder, ribs and upper back
Progressive rotator cuff and shoulder blade strengthening
Load management so you can keep training where possible
When to see a doctor
See your GP or go to an emergency department after a fall or injury with sudden loss of strength or an obvious deformity, if the joint is hot and swollen or you have a fever, or if shoulder pain comes with chest pain or shortness of breath.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a scan?
Not usually at the start. Most shoulder problems can be assessed clinically, and we'll refer you if imaging would change your management.
Should I stop going to the gym?
Often you can keep training with some changes. We'll help you adjust exercises and loads while your shoulder recovers.
How long does frozen shoulder take?
Frozen shoulder can take many months to resolve. Treatment aims to manage pain and keep as much movement and function as possible along the way.
